Sometimes understanding where data comes from and where it's going seems to be a mystery.  This video outlines how most data gets generated and where it goes.  Understanding the lifecycle of data can be the start of understanding the steps to managing it's use.  Additionally, Understanding the difference between Data and Information is critical.  You may be Data RICH but Information POOR.  In other words the data isn't presenting itself in a form that a business person can understand.
