IS THE PLAYING FIELD LEVEL NOW IN NEXT-GENERATION DATA WAREHOUSING?

Originally, when we spoke to Jared Hillam in September 2020, leading cloud data warehouse vendors sported technology advantages and differentiation against the field. But by the second conversation in December 2021, the field had become more crowded in terms of capabilities. What are the differentiating competitive elements today? Which platforms are in position to build roadmaps and competitive advantages to scale? What industry verticals are crucial for vendors to win today and at what point do small or mid-sized customers become important for adoption trends?

Previous conversations with Jared Hillam:

IS THE PLAYING FIELD LEVEL NOW IN NEXT-GENERATION DATA WAREHOUSING?

Jared has spoken in the past about the history and commoditization of Networks which in his view may imply that Best of Breed SaaS products will outperform competing products from cloud vendors. We counter that most investors would wager the opposite viewpoint. We will ask Jared to take us through an example or a category where he thinks this rule of thumb will apply (or has applied), and also share where he thinks exceptions will appear to this rule of thumb.

OPTIMIZATION & ELASTICITY

At Intricity, Jared has helped many organizations reduce their cloud data expense while increasing their average number of data queries. We will ask Jared to give us a high-level explanation of how. Is there a rule of thumb that can help us understand that, say, a 30% reduction in price per query would unlock xx% more queries? If customers of leading cloud players do not optimize, what is the likelihood that they throttle queries or that they search for cheaper alternatives? In all this discussion of expensive cloud compute, have clients started to think that on-premise data warehousing is cheaper? Finally, AWS spent ~15 years reducing the cost of S3; are they at a point where they must do the same for EC2 to trigger more demand? Can they?
